Heynow, bringing in the new year has been a blast for me for many years now. Keep rockin' Creek. Hope to reunite with all my friends, see you there. Rich, Don't forget to bring a copy of "Camp Creek" for me. Also, did anyone get a copy of the Hoops & Hops double night gig. Friday night was especially hot. If you have the tape and can get me a copy, please write. Peace.

Hey! Happy Holidays to everyone! Long time fan since 85. Have not caught a show in AGES! Glad to be back in the area, and able to hopefully, catch a show! Need some help getting some old shows.... Received some email responses, but accidently deleted them out(had 120 spam email from being on the mancow list) interested in old shows, with greg g, from late 80's to approx 91? Blood red roses.....Mystery Train.......can anyone help? PS in regard to the numerous messages PHISH vs CREEK, my pref is with Creek......I have been a fan of PHISH back when they would play the Campus club for 5 bucks....but the energy isnt the same as CREEK. Plus I may be biased, I met my husband because of CREEK...................Please feel free to email comments, and info re the shows I am looking for! Have a good one! Kat

I wrote on this section back in February last year and although I heard from a few people nothing ever worked out. I moved to Georgia in 1991 and haven't seen or heard Max Creek since, excepts for Windows album. I saw the lineup for Vermont shows in the months to come and being back in Vermont I'm looking forward to seeing a show or two. I recently traded for a few nice sb's and the feeling was back. I've got 1200 hours of Dead if anyone is interested, I'd love to trade for some Max Creek!

hi, Steve again. Since moving from rochester ny to here it has been an absolute joy to see one of my favorite bands many times this year. Everytime i see scott, john, mark, rob and even litt'l abe i want to see them again! i wish i had a tascam to patch, but that is $$$... So, anyone willing to dub me some '98 creek, i would just love. I have nakamichi decks, so my preference is a nakamichi parent (but not strictly necessary; i'm not being a snob - naks are far and away better than almost any analog deck, hands down). Either Trade or blanks/postage. Also, if a kind DAT taper will spin me any of the aforementioned shows, I will gladly make copies for others. ps. Shockra - what an awesome band that was. I'll gladly spin a show of theirs for anyone who wants...peace

Last time, i promise!!!!
the taper we are talking about at the Atomic Club really came around, he was just new and had no clue, but Rob who got the boot at Harpers has been around for a while and has just had a major attitude and has been a real jerk. I will have no problem say "NO" to him when he ask for a patch.

Kris, if you're just starting out taping, the best thing to do is bring a big home stereo analog deck in an even bigger suitcase to the show. When you get to the soundboard, start madly ripping out cables as if you know what you are doing. Then, spill a drink on all the electronics. You'll be one of us in no time ;)

I will eventually be able to trade some Shockra, if anybody is interested..Edwin (the ex-bassist) is in the process of sending me about 15 tapes, and they should be pretty crispy...so let me know!! Hi, I am buying a portable DAT machine, the Sony TCD-D8 and would like to start taping shows. At Creek shows I noticed a table that many people seem to hook up there machines to what looks like the sound board in some way. I am completely new to this and was wondering besides the machine what kind of cords, or patches do I need to get taping at creek shows. I plan to tape the Rochester shows Jan 8th and 9th and would really appreciete some advice on what I need to buy and maybe some guidance at the show email me if you can help Kris Booth

Anybody willing to spin the Toad's Place, August 28, 1998 show for B and P, and get it to me pronto gets much good lovin' from this lonely New Yorker trying to find the vibe in Orange County. The show may not have been killer, but I was there, and it would mean a LOT to me to have a decent-sounding record of the experience. Somebody send me some hometown love...

Money for tapes is not cool. Bands allow recording for personal use, and not for commerce. It only takes one instance of bad judgement to lose access.

Hey There

The Phil's Farm Party Tape Tree is just about ready to go. A number of people have signed up already. Signups will continue until Wednesday, 9/30/98 and I will publish the structure to everyone on the tree on Friday. So, if you want to be in on this, send me an email with information about your taping capabilities (what kind of deck or decks you have and how many children you want to spin tapes for). BTW, the show takes four 100's. Again, the tree will be closed after 9/30....

Ditto for me. There were some posts in the Freak Forum a few days ago about a tape tree . . . What happened? Ya know, it's tough being a Creek fan in exile - you guys are my only source of vicarious Creek-related thrills, not to mention tapes. That Phil's show looks insane, legendary, etc. - so help out the poor temporary Texan. What do y'all say? I'd be happy to take part in a tree - or to benefit from the kindness of tapers . . .

Yea, thats kind of a bunk deal that they din't mention Creek in THe Courant. They are usually pretty good at being correct(sometimes). I called the WHCN hotline and they said the line up is(in order):the Husky Blues band,Texas Flood, The machine, Creek, MMW, shaboo allstars. Judgeing buy the times, Creek and MMW each have like 90min-2 hours and the mesage sai Creek starts aroun 3 something and MMW at 6:15. Hopefully some more details will surface. later

I just found out yesterday that Medeski MArtin and Wood are playing after Creek at the Shaboo Reunion thing in Willimantic. THis is pretty unbelievable. If any of you guys haven't checked out MMW you are in for a treat. Do you think they will let us in the sbd for MMW or do you think the tapers will all be kicke out after Creek playes. MMW is very liberarl on taping but last time I checked sbd patches were not allowed. That would kick ass if we could all stay in but if not I should be bringing my set of mics for anyone who would like patched out of them. I've been bouncin off the walls ever since I found this out. 2 amazing bands right down the road and only $12. Yes. later joe

Greetings Tapers! A Camp Creek Note- Just a note that you may have already heard, and will be hearing again. If you have a portable deck, bring batteries. We can't guarentee that there will be enough power for everyone to plug into. There will be tables for decks, and I'm working on some kind of patch bay/distribution amp for audio feeds. Please pass this info along, having just got online myself, I know some people have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 90's. Please be sure to say HI!

HI Tapers. Some important info on Taping CAMP CREEK '98. If you are running a portable deck, bring batteries, and lots of them. AC will be at a premium and looks like there will not be any available for tapers. Also there will be 2 eight (8) foot long tables in front of the soundboard for the tape decks, No tape decks will be allowed on the Sound Engineer's riser at all. Remember Batteries again and lots of them, there will be a record amount of tapeable music that weekend including around eight total hours of Max Creek. More info as things take form.

I have no digi cables so I woul like to patch out of your line out unless you had a digi cable I could borrow. If you are going this fri and are running a set of decent mics, please email me so I will know who to look for when I get there. Also do Creek allow sbd patches? If so what would be the possiblity of me being able to get one of these. thanks. later

Hello, This is my first post here, I'd like to say hi first. I saw Max Creek for the first time at Gartons in Vail, CO on 3/20/98 (I think), the show was great, the sound was nice, I saw a couple people taping. I would be eternally greatful if somebody could hook me with my first show. If not, I still would like a fun, HQ Creek show. I have around 500 hours of Dead, Phish, moe., Seapods, SCI, LoS, Bob Marley, others too. Thanks, nice to talk to y'all. Peace, Al

It was a hot steaming night before the closing of Lupos a few years back. The place was packed, and it WAS a "walk on the wild side". Just when I thought it was getting to be a bit too much, they went into a version of "Jack Straw" that I'll never forget. It can only be discribed as the feeling of stepping out of a sauna, and jumping into a cool lake at midnight. I'm sure y'all know the feeling. I'd give anything to find a quality recording of it. I've got plenty to trade. Let me know. (please)

Mike Gordon is the bassist of Phish. He has sat in with Max Creek on a nunber of ocassions, playing bass, guitar, and even banjo if I am not mistaken. Also Mike Gordon and Scott M. played together in a one time 30 minute gig as Mike Gordon and the Drop Caps back in January 1997, which also featured former Max Creek drummer Greg D. and Gordon Stone definitely on banjo. That _was_ only a one time gig, right? Peace, Kaz.

Buzz, I'm not sure there is a Cornell for Creek. The Cornell show is 20 years old, its reputation has been made known. Creek doesn't have the massive tape trading audienc the dead did, and people are more interested in finding shows they were at from last week than "the best" show. Must my opinion. BTW, if anyone out there has the Scott & Mark show from 2 weeks ago and feels like making a copy (and maybe even bringing it to Toads tomorrow), drop me a line? I'd be eternally blissful.

I need some opinions. I just bought a Marantz PMD 221 tape recorder. It has MONO capabilities. What is the deal with that should I return it and by one with STEREO? Will I get a comparable sound when using microphones. I believe if I want a good SBD I should use a STEREO unit. Correct? Please email me or post your ideas. I need some opinions I'm new at this. I will say I upgraded a very low decible tape and made it sound 100% listenable.

Hello, It's early sunday morning, and I'm listening to a Max Creek show from 8/31/97 - totally blown away. I just received some Phish tapes in a trade, and this show was thrown in as filler. So, I immediately went to the Max Creek web page to look up some additional information about the band. Why have I not heard this incredible band before? Anyway, I'm hoping someone can help me out - this is a shameless grovel for a B&P deal on a show of your choice, since I've heard nothing else from the band. The only thing I can offer up for trade is the Phish '97 MSG run, but I prefer a B&P deal if possible. My two small boys (3 and 2) already love the stuff. Thanks in advance, Todd

It's all relative, SF, no medium is perfect. Analog recordings deteriorate noticably over a 10 yr period. A DAT tape might still sound perfect in fifty years or it might have a droupout ten minutes from now. Of course, how you play back you tape, makes a huge difference. The chain is only as stong as the weakest link. Playing a tape back through your Fisher(-Price) stereo is going to sound shitty no matter what the medium. The better your reproduction, the more you realize that all your tapes sound like shit (w/ the exception of 5/8/93 which sounds good everywhere). Hat, I don't know what you are talking about, I don't own any milk crates.... they are the property of Marcus Dairy. And my good friend Buzz.... I truly will miss your presence in these parts. You wit, your candor, your honesty, and your friendship have brought many a smile and good feeling to the cold distance of cyberspace. I hope you find what you are looking for and THE MUSIC IS BLISS!!!

TM, while you're at it, can you shed light on another aspect, the shelf life of analog vs DAT? is the jury still out on this? How much longer will a DAT tape take to deteriorate, like some of my 10-15 year old analog tapes are now? You can always seek upgrades, and thats what i've been doing, but it's one of the main reasons i've considered making the switch. I know there's a big difference, just not sure of exact details, if there are any.

Ah Tony, now I get it. I had thought you were talking about only Creek tapes. Since I do know folk with masters and DATs, going DAT won't improve my quality for Creek tapes all that much. BUT, you were also talking about other bands too. For dead shows, for moe. shows, and for other bands I enjoy listening to, yes, it will help, as I won't have those generations to deal with. PLUS, I won't get crappy tapes in the mail anymore.

- Thursday, February 12, 1998 at 19:47:05 (EST)
Guac.... what I am trying to say..... you are usually high up the chain as far as Creek tapes go. You know a lot of people with masters and first gens. Thus, most of the Creek tapes you get now (analog) are fairly high quality. Now lets say, for instance, that you were looking to get a tape of one of the Pink Floyd Wall shows from 1980. Do you know anyone who taped the show? What generation do you think that tape would be, by the time it got down to you? Ten generations of analog noise makes for some shitty quality. With the advent of DAT, many tapers are taking their old masters and transfering them to digital. When you 'clone' a DAT tape, the copy is an exact (assuming everything functions correctly) replication of the original. So, I still might be ten gens down the ladder for that PF show, but mine (assuming all the gens are DAT) is going to sound like the master. If I spin it on DAT for you, your copy will sound identical to mine. Do you see the possibilities here?

Just my two cents Guac, but I would say DAT trading is a huge benefit to collecting bands that don't have a big tape trading scene. The fact that you get very low gen tapes from the creek scene makes a huge difference in quality in the analog format. DAT levels the playing field for those further down the line. A huge benefit in collecting hard to find tapes, as far as the presevation of quality goes.

Will Guac go DAT? Inquiring minds want to know. So allow me to think outloud for a bit... Why go DAT? Many reasons. First, I can clear out some of the space in my house by giving away my analog collection. I can start a new tape collection from scratch, now that I know what I am doing, where I don't need EVERY tape in existance. But mainly, I want to go DAT because I miss tape-trading. I have cut down on trading alot, because there are too many thieves, and the quality of the average analog tapes have gone way down, so I end up throwing away half the new tapes I get. PLUS one of my analog decks is beyond repair, so it would need a replacement anyway. As long as I am spending the money... (Which reminds me, anyone who has goten tapes from me in the last few weeks, if there's any problems with those tapes, let me know. I don't know how long my deck has been lousy) So I cut down on trading alot because of the poor quality, and I miss it. I still love getting new tapes in the mail, and I do still get new stuff, as I have imposed on the kindness of a few DAT tapers, but I miss trading. The only things holding me back? Well, the prohibitive cost for one. Getting 2 DAT decks in one shot, plus all the cables and whatnot and a supply of blanks. And is it worth getting this stuff for only the few bands out there that have a significant tape trading scene? Who knows? As of now, I am leaning on the side of getting the DAT... BUt I am pondering some more before I dive in.

Hey DBX, I think most tapers prefer not to use any kind of noise reduction at all. However, with the tapes that already have it, I would leave them as is. The dbx encoding on the tape should transfer to any subsequent tapes without further use of any noise reduction. In other words, keep both the play and record deck set w/o noise reduction. The real test though is what your ears think. Do you like the sound of playback with or w/o the dbx on?

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone uses "Maxell's MXS series" tapes? Or if XLII were better for taping? the description is below...thnaks Maxell's MXS series is an excellent tape if you need a metal bias tape. Only use metal tapes if your mastering a show (recording live), recording from DAT to analog, recording FROM a metal cassette, or you want to crank your levels into the red. If you've got questions regarding metal tape being right for your application, give us a call and we'll be glad to shed some light.

Greetings. Does anyone make CD's? With recordable CD drives starting at about $400 (last time I checked)it seems to be somewhat of a good idea. While that range exceeds my means at this time, someone out there may have the hardware. So, I was just wondering if anyone could hook me up with some Creek CD's. (Actually, it is perhaps a wonder why the band themselves have not incorporated this method to share their music. Oh well,...) Please e-mail a reply to 5930mkamo@umbsky.cc.umb.edu if you have one. Many thanks. :-)

Following is a warning to all you tapers out there................"In February, Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed in Lompoc, Calif., as he fell face-first through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing.Death was caused when the large flashlight he had placed in his mouth (to keep his hands free) crammed against the base of his skull as he hit the floor." Don't drink and tape! The tape you lose may be mine (well, the one you may have copied for me eventually!)

Hey friends! Forgive the cross-post, but for tapers, this is relevant in each groupI have posted to. I'm looking for some adventurous people who love music, dig taping, and like to share. As many of you may have seen, I have run a number of trees seeded by Marc Nutter. As I have been consistently pleased with the tapes, we are considering setting up a Perma-tree to spread some of the great tunes. This tree will feature a wide variety of bands such as Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews Band, ekoostik hookah, Galactic, Leftover Salmon, Max Creek, Phish, String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Zero and others. At the same time, this tree will give everyone involved the opportunity to hear direct a/b comparisons of microphones, mic positions, cables, pre-amps, and a/b converters as Marc almost always makes some type of equipment change at set break. If you're interested, here's how it will work. Each month, between 2 to 4 90 meter DATs will go out. The tree is hopefully only going to have two levels. The high branches will need to spin between 3 and 5 sets of DATs each month depending on the response to this posting. The leaves must be willing to spin 2 or 3 sets, depending on demand for the tapes. Some months, leaves might not have to spin anything. Folks dropping by the Sonic Sense site wanting tapes will be directed to these leaves. The whole structure will be HTML'ized on that website Depending on demand, some months could be a full spinning load. If you are a DAT one-decker or analog only and are wondering how this offer might apply to you, the perma-tree will need a few D>A folks and some A>A folks as well. Ideally the tree will look like this: DAT seed Seed spins for Five High Branches Each High Branch spins for 5 Branches 15 D>D branches spin up to 3 sets as needed 10 D>A branches spin a set of Analog tapes 10 A>A branches spin up to 3 sets of tapes as needed If you are interested in this idea, please contact me at KevRobb@flink.com. I will send you a sign up and chat about positioning on the tree. Thanks to all who have read this far! I am listening to some possible seeds for the first month's tree and they sound so incredible. This is going to be a lot of fun and get a lot of great music out there. Peace Kevin

Taping is one big Skinner Box experiment. Behavior is repeated until it is refined. Sadly, most long time tapers will always suffer from the cycling effect:anxious moments every 45 or 50 minutes. Even digital tapers get the pangs. Alas, this is our sacrifice to the craft.

My belief and my practice is this; In a non-trading situation where you are making tapes to help someone out, it is the responsibility of the other person to look after ALL expenses. That means round trip postage. It should also include a self adressed mailer or a reusable with pre-adressed stick on labels. I also insist that people do not send normal bias cassettes. To me..... they are a waste or wear and tear to my equiptment. My advice, leave the tapes sitting in the corner and wait for the person to contact you and forward you the proper postage.

Joe, my apologies for besmirching your name, that was not my intention. But you need to read more closely too. Nowhere did I say that you approved of 2:1 deals. I simply said that "your" suggestion of 6:5 deals was wrong. From your post, it was your suggestion (though it was perhaps read a bit out of context).Good to hear you don't approve of it either. Now, back to my original ettiquette question, which was the reason for my anonyminity (sp?) in the first place. Anyone have an answer for me?

Joe, when someone can properly determine how many tapes their stereo is going to be able to tape over its lifetime, then depreciate the value of that deck using currently acceptable accounting methods, plus a copy of their electric bill and watts usage statement from their stereo's instruction manual, then I will re-consider my stance regarding 2 for 1's. Dubbing blanks is supposed to be to help spread the music, period. If someone wants to charge for it, then screw them, and there will be plenty of other people out there with good souls who will do it for nothing. And while dubbing the amount of blanks I do WILL indead shorten the life of my stereo, the picture in my mind of when someone gets their first Creek tape in the mail with awesome quality makes it worthwhile.

I suggested that those who feel they must "Profit" from a newbie ( and most newbies are willing to give up something when they have nothing to trade ) cut their profiteering down to something less obnoxious than an extra blank for every tape run. And If I keep the 11 cents from newbie provided postage is that PROFITEERING

We feel that perhaps a bill sent along with the next batch of tapes will work. Don't forget to add the cost of our Departments report posted here, YOUR postage, wear/tear on your machine, gas to the post office, cost of the Doritos eaten while making the tapes, punitive damages, etc. If you play this right, you could be rich!!

Have an ettiquette question for the tapers out there. A few months ago, I offered to make some tapes for someone, and they agreed to send blanks and return postage. When the tapes came, there was no return postage. So they forgot, big deal, i made the tapes and sent them along with the cash from my pocket. However, I just recently got another batch of tapes I agreed to make, from the same person, and even though I reminded them, again, there is no return postage. Whats the proper thing to do? And joefna? Your suggestion of 2 for 1 deals, or 6 for 5 is profiteering and illegal and immoral. Just my 2 cents.

- Saturday, January 10, 1998 at 14:05:18 (EST)
Maybe those traders should cut it down to 6 banks for five tapes back. The one blank should certainly cover postage & wear & tear on the old deck. Call me narrowminded but that's my 2 cents. LOL

Living here in VA for the past 5 years I don't get to see the Creek much and that is my biggest regret in moving! I need help - I am seriously deficient in hot Creek tapes. Anyone willing to send me copies of their best tapes will be rewarded!$! Please e-mail me - Thanx!
